Here at Sidney Lee Welding, we mostly like to keep things positive. However, it’s important to acknowledge that accidents can happen in the welding industry or with welding hobbyists in general. Safety is our top priority, and we want it to be yours too. Let’s take a look at some of the common accidents that can occur when welding.

Flash Burn

Did you know that the infrared light radiation from a welding arc can
actually burn the eye’s retina? Eventually, this damage can cause
cataracts and lead to long term vision problems. It’s important to wear the appropriate eye protection when working with welding equipment. And, if you notice anything feeling “off,” don’t delay getting checked out by an eye doctor!

Hearing Loss

Probably due to the loud nature of the work environment, welders can sometimes run into issues with their hearing. Did you know that welders are exposed to about 85 decibels of nonstop noise throughout an average work day? Again, it’s important to make sure that you are using the proper equipment to protect your hearing from this kind of damage.

Exposure to Harmful Fumes and Gasses

Naturally, there are many different types of fumes and gasses that a welder might be exposed to throughout their day. It’s important to be mindful of these exposures and try to wear protective masks and breathing equipment as you see fit.

Welding can be a very fulfilling job. However, it does not come without its risks. It’s important to know the risks and also to know how you can prevent accidents from occurring.
