How to Maintain Your Metal Fence
Metal fences provide great security to your commercial or residential building with a strong polished look, but they require maintenance to keep them in great shape and to avoid problematic issues. Where to start? We’ve got you covered.
Start by inspecting your metal fence on a regular basis. Doing so will prevent smaller problems from escalating into larger, more costly ones. Identifying and correcting any issues early on is best, especially regarding rust, which can spread quickly. Check your fence carefully and note any issues that weren’t there before. Different climates will affect metal fences differently. For example, if you live in a humid climate or in an area where it rains a lot, you’ll have to inspect your fence more frequently than someone who lives in a drier climate. You can always hire a professional to inspect your metal fence regularly, if you need help doing so.
It’s also a good idea to add a protective coating to your metal fence to guard it from rust. You can do this yourself, but it is a labor intensive job with extensive preparation required. All existing rust and any other coatings would have to be removed from your fence before applying the protective coating, so it may be preferable to hire a professional to handle this project. Make sure to ask about their service, options, and cost before signing on the dotted line.
Additionally, clean your metal fence regularly to remove any corrosive materials and extend its life, but check for any paint chips before doing so. If any paint chips are found, repair them immediately to maintain the fence’s protective coating and to avoid serious problems. Simply remove the chipped paint with a wire brush, as well as any rust or other materials. First prepare the area with a primer, then paint over the affected area. Once dry, use a soft brush with some warm water and soap to clean your fence, then hose it off and let it dry. Do this at least twice a year to ensure a long life for your fence.
These steps should help maintain the good condition of your metal fence for a long time. If you find any serious problems with it that would require a welding repair, call Sidney Lee Welding Supply or stop by one of our stores in the Atlanta, GA area. Our experts will be happy to help you.
