Probably least surprising, steel is one of the most commonly used metals in welding today. This is because steel is durable, readily available, and highly versatile. Roughly 2 billion metric tons of steel is produced each year, a number that continues to steadily increase year after year.
Did you know that aluminum is the most abundant metal found in the world? It is commonly used due to its wide availability, exceptional resistance to corrosion, and its ability to be manipulated for a vast array of applications across the welding industry. It does have one caveat, however. Certain grades of aluminum can be extremely difficult to work with. A particular type of iron, cast iron, makes for easier welding with its low melting point that necessitates no specialized welding methods. Cast iron is used to make many kitchen appliances, fences, and piping.
Working with brass can be a bit on the harder side as the melting point is directly affected by the zinc composition. Brass is often found in electrical materials, musical instruments, and plumbing applications.
With a high thermal conductivity, many people consider copper welding to be on the easier side. Additionally, copper is a soft metal with a shape that can be easily manipulated. Even still, you may need some specialized equipment to properly work with copper, depending on your project.
