Advance as a Pipefitter

In a recent blog post, we talked about the benefits of working as a pipefitter and what it takes to get a job in this career. This line of work is very beneficial, with lots of opportunities for growth and promotion if you’re ready to work hard. What does it take? While it’s good to have experience and skill, its equally important to know what not to do. Let’s look at some of the mistakes that can damage your success and discuss the best ways to avoid these issues!

We know there’s sometimes a rush to get work done, but as a pipefitter, it’s vital that you take the time to complete every task thoroughly. When you’re finished using your plasma or oxy-acetylene cutting machine, the oxide residue left on your materials should not be overlooked. Take time to ground this away so that your weld is effective and clean. Remember, grinding is better than burning with your welding equipment, as this latter option causes the piece to become more porous. It produces not only a more stable weld, but it also shows that you care about doing a good job which always helps if you’re looking to advance.

Whatever cut you’re about to make, stop and make sure you’ve done the math correctly. If your pieces don’t fit together well and there are gaps left after the weld, you’ll have to go back through and add additional metal to fill these spaces. This can reduce stainless steel’s resistance to corrosion over time. It doesn’t matter if you’ve made the cut several times before, pause and check to ensure precision. In the long run, you’ll vastly improve your cutting skills and become a better and better pipefitter.
