Welding in the News

With recent news out of Europe that mistakes with welding equipment could put some nuclear reactors at risk, we at Sidney Lee Welding Supply Co want to take a moment to review welding in the news. Let’s especially keep in mind the ups and downs that come with any potential defects in welding quality. The national power company of France has announced that a specific welding weakness could affect some but not all of the nation’s atomic power plants. The use of welding equipment in question is called a steam generator weld, which has not been always regulated up to specifications adequate for use in nuclear power in Europe. Let’s hope France takes the appropriate time to review which components have been properly welded before anything becomes dangerous.

WELDING MACHINES MAKE BETTER JEEPS – OR NOT!

As for news more local to welding equipment in Atlanta, GA, as we reported here in last month’s blog post on the subject, Jeep’s Wrangler model had some difficulties stemming from inadequate welding, too. The Office of Defects Investigation looked into the matter last year. Now, this week the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration turns its beady eyes to Jeep’s errors of welding, too. The issue hinges on whether the welds made to the frames were up to code or not. There is even a welding coverup in the investigation, one that relates to whether a certain company was hired to spot weld some cheap fixes over certain known bad weldments.
